Best Home Security Devices for 2017

You want to keep your home safe, which is awesome.

But how do you know what home security devices or systems are best for you?

You could spend your day searching site after site to compile a list of the best ones. Or you could let me do it for you.

In fact, I have already done it. So now instead of spending your day on the internet, you can go out and have some fun. You deserve some time in the sun. Just don’t forget the sunblock.

If you haven’t noticed there are LOTS of home security devices and systems to choose from. But before you buy anything you need to know what you want. We no longer live in a world where there are just a few home security providers.

Today there are hundreds, maybe thousands, of companies that want to help you keep your home secure. If that sounds overwhelming, it is. This is why you need to know what kind of home security devices you want before you buy.

But what if you don’t know what you need?

Relax, you have homesecuritylist.com. We love this stuff. Call us a bunch of dorks but we genuinely want to help you find the best way to keep your home safe.

So, now you can worry less. We are your home security Yoda. Find home security you will. Sorry, I couldn’t stop myself. The force is strong with this blog…okay I will stop now. Maybe.

How to Know What you Want in a Home Security System

If you are new to home security it can be frustrating when you are trying to compare devices and services. So before we get started on what devices are out there, let’s start with the different forms that home security systems come in.

Monitored or Not Monitored

This first one is pretty simple. Do you want a professional monitoring service, or do you want to be responsible for your system? The difference between the two options depends really on how committed you can be to managing your own home security.

A monitored service will watch your house 24/7, rain or shine. If you don’t add a monitored service you will be the one watching your house 24/7, rain or shine. This also includes during vacations, and business trips.

You will be the monitoring system.

You can buy devices that can send you alerts if something should trigger a motion detection device. But you would still be you that has to call the authorities to let them know that something is taking place in your home.

That is why when it comes to your home security we recommend using a professional monitoring service. You will have to pay an added fee for the service but you will always know that your home is being protected.

But if you like the idea of self-monitoring, we understand. So we will show you devices and systems that come with a professional service and some that don’t.

Professional Installation or DIY

This is where you need to figure out how handy you are or how handy you want to be. First, there is no shame in not being handy. Not everyone knows what to do with a drill.

If everyone knew how to install their own stuff, there would be no professional installers. So if don’t know a Phillips head from a slot head screwdriver you are not alone.

You could also buy a DIY system and then hire someone on the side to install it. We won’t tell anyone. But if you are the mayor of DIY, then you should be right at home putting your home security system in place.

We can’t say enough about how important keeping your home secure is. Regardless of what you choose keeping your home and family safe should always be the number one priority.

Our Favorite DIY Outdoor Home Security Devices

Kuna Light Fixture

Kuna Light FixtureIf you want a clever porch light that can keep an eye on things, the Kuna Light Fixture is what you need. It looks like an elegant light fixture, but on the inside, it is a home security camera and a good one at that. With 720p HD live video, motion detection and two-way audio this inconspicuous camera is a great outdoor security device.

You can also get cloud recording, but you do have to pay for it. It starts at $60 per year. You also have to install it yourself (or pay someone to do it for you). There are some things that you sacrifice for a pleasant face. The Kuna lacks night vision, and it cannot integrate with other third-party devices.

But I think the worst is that you only get a 2-hour free storage period for video recordings. This is far less than most of the other competitors, they typically allow a 24-hour period. If you don’t like the style of the craftsman, you can choose a more tradition design.

Kuna Toucan

Kuna ToucanWhile we are talking about cameras, and Kuna, we should mention the Toucan. Much like the original Kuna, the Toucan has a simple discreet design that most likely won’t catch the attention of a would-be intruder.

There is a lot packed into the Toucan, it has HD video resolution and a motion sensor. Other features include two-way audio and cloud storage. You can use the Toucan in place of an existing light. Its designed to retrofit to your existing outdoor lights.

One thing that would be nice to see is if Kuna could take the leap and integrate with other devices from other companies. It is so nice when things work together. But for now, you just have to settle for just having a camera that doubles as an outdoor light, or vice versa.

Either way, you are adding a lighting feature that can record video. Which is kind of James Bondish when you think about it. The Toucan will require a light bulb, but other than that it is pretty easy to install. I did it, and I am not handy. At all.

There are a few things that we wish they would add, like night vision. It just seems like they are missing something that almost every outdoor camera has.

Netgear Arlo Pro

Netgear Arlo ProArlo Pro is arguably the best outdoor security device you could have. It is weatherproof, waterproof and wireless. Which makes it an ideal camera to keep an eye on the outside of your house. While it doesn’t look like an outdoor light, it does have a simple design that makes it hard to detect.

When it comes to capturing video, the Arlo is like the Chuck Norris of video capture, it always gets the best shot. In addition, it has mobile apps that are easy to use and feature packed. Often camera apps are like trying to put a puzzle together at night with no lights on, but Arlo is refreshingly easy.

You can also take Arlo indoors, it works well in any environment. But as an outdoor camera it excels, it has eight night-vison infrared lights that can let you see clearly even in the dead of night. The face of the camera also has LED lights that can alert you to an issue with the camera.

Arlo also has a rechargeable battery that can last up to six months. The recharging dock is not connected to the camera, but you can plug it in using the super long 88-inch power cord that comes with the device. With a 130-degree wide-angle glass lens and 183″ megapixel AP CMOS sensor that can capture video at 720p.

The Arlo Pro also has an intelligent motion and sound detection that is event based, so you won’t have the continuous recording that comes with the Arlo Q. But if you have the Q the controls and app are almost the same, so it shouldn’t take you too much time to get used to the Pro.

Abode Home Security Starter Kit

Abode Home Security Starter KitIf you are looking for a starter system that is reasonably priced, Abode is the place you should start. It is full DIY, meaning you install it, once you install it you can choose to monitor it yourself, or for $30 a monthly, you can add professional monitoring.

At around $300 you can get a home security system that comes with lots of impressive features. Abode is one of the most feature rich systems you could find. It has a Z-wave and ZigBee hub, two window/door sensors, a security camera and motion detector, a key fob for a remote arm and disarm feature and there are a lot of other things that you can connect to it.

You have to buy some of the add-ons but you can do so ala carte. You can also integrate with Nest, IFTTT and Alexa. Which gives you a wide variety of options and with Alexa you can control Abode using voice commands.

Setting up the starter kit isn’t that difficult. I always like to try and set things up because I am a hot mess when it comes to putting things together. So if I can do it, I am confident you can too. And if you aren’t graceful, one I understand, and two you can hire people who are.

You can connect other devices using the Gateway, which is the Z-wave, ZigBee and WiFi hub. The hub will let you communicate with your sensors using the abodeRF protocol. The protocol encrypts communication between the Gateway and the cloud. The contact sensors can protect doors, windows, cabinets and pretty much anything that opens and closes in your home.

The Gateway can support up to 150 connected devices, and up to six IP streaming cameras. Which over time will allow you to create a robust home security and home automation system. So how is that $300 looking now, pretty good right?

Samsung SmartThings

SmartThingsSmartThings started off okay. It could work with multiple wireless protocols, and you could create If This Then That (IFTTT) recipes (rules you create that controls your devices). But it wasn’t what we expected. We expected more from SmartThings.

It had a lot going for it, but it was lacking some of the things you would expect in a smart home security/automation system. But with the second generation of SmartThings, we are seeing some improvements. Which is great for you.

The first thing you should love about SmartThings is the hub. It’s $99. No, really. One of the awesome things about the second generation hub is the price stayed the same. Even though it can do a lot more now, the price remained at a reasonable $99.

It has a more powerful processor, it supports video cameras and you can control everything with your smartphone, and they didn’t raise the price one penny. Which makes us both surprised and happy.

SmartThings is designed for users who have or want to have a fully connected smart home. With a hub that can manage over 200 devices, you can pretty much connect everything in your house. Well, maybe not that old turntable you can’t seem to let go from your DJing days. But everything else is probably good to go.

You know how you feel when you can’t open a jar, so you start trying to pry it open, and it still won’t budge? Sometimes adding new devices on SmartThings feels like that. If you are adding new devices you will need to bring some patience along with the instructions.

If you want to see things, like your security camera feed, on your TV Samsung can do that. Starting with their 2016 SUHD TVs will come with SmartThings integrations built in. Which means you can manage your devices and see your camera feed on your television.

Scout Alarm Wireless Home Security

Scout Alarm Wireless Home SecurityIf commitments aren’t your thing, Scout is your perfect partner. Scout will never try to tie you into a long-term relationship. And Scout will never try to guilt you into staying with them. That being said, you may find yourself falling for Scout, and that is okay too.

Scout is an attractive home security system, it is sleek and modern. And when it comes to price, it’s very reasonable. After many fruitless searches to find “the one” the founder of Scout felt like all of the existing home security devices were too old looking and dated. So he built his own (now I have the Weird Science song in my head).

He wanted something that wasn’t going to break the bank with expensive demands, so he designed devices that would give you exactly what you need. Scout lets you choose your equipment. It doesn’t make you pick a package, so you can get exactly what you want.

Scout Equipment

Device Price
Scout Hub $129
Door Panel $69.00
Access Sensor $29.00
Motion Sensor $49.00

Scout also has two monitoring plans you can add.  They come with no contracts. So you are free to leave them if things aren’t working out. But we suspect you may keep them around for a while. If you are looking for something long term, you can pay a yearly rate for your monitoring service and save 10%.

You can also customize the rules with Scout. So you can always be the one in charge. While the app has pre-set options Home, Away, Sleep and Vacation, you can add as many additional options as you need. Rules are set in a similar fashion to IFTTT, so if you are familiar with the”If this, then that” formula you should be set. If not we are here to help you.

Scout likes to keep things close to the vest. So they don’t really have that many friends, which is kind of a letdown. If you are into loners and rebels, Scout might be just what you need. But I think Scout would be more appealing if they got out more and made some friends like IFTTT or maybe hang out with SmartThings, they could introduce Scout to hundreds of new friends.

Logi Circle

Why can’t you have the best of both worlds? You deserve it.

The Logi Circle camera is part home security and part video camera. Which means it keeps your home safe while allowing you to record the videos you post on social media.

So you can get more likes while making sure no one steals your stuff, genius right?

Logi Circle was originally built as a nanny cam, but luckily it realized that it was destined for greater things. While the new version can still be a great nanny cam, it is also a formidable home security device. Which makes it a great option for everyone, even if you don’t have a kid or a dog.

Which makes it a great option for everyone, even if you don’t have a kid or a dog.

There was a time when you could tell a webcam from a security camera. But newer security cameras are a blend of both. The Circle is one of the first hybrid cameras, but we are sure they won’t be the last. The Circle has a small base that mounts the camera. The camera itself looks like a baseball with lights, above the lens you have an indicator light that will change colors depending on the status.

The camera itself looks like a baseball with lights, above the lens you have an indicator light that will change colors depending on the status.

While the camera has vertical tilt on the base, you can’t move it left or tight. But if you place it on the magnetic base and charger you will be able to move it both horizontally and vertically. You can even leave it on that base, which makes it easier.

Setting up your Logi Circle is super easy. You just download the Android or iOS apps, turn the Circle on and wait for the light to turn blue and blink. After that, all you have to do is use the app to connect the camera to your WiFi.

If you need to turn the camera off or reset it, you can find both on the Circle. The power button is located under the base and the reset button can be found on the back of the base. These will be the only two external controls. The Circle has no ports or other external connection points.

The app itself is a breeze to use. It has a simple interface and just a few icons. You can see a scrolling wheel that displays your recordings. You can also access the live feed from the main screen. By swiping down you can play existing videos.

They aren’t a lot of options with the Circle. You can swipe left on the app to see the ones that are there. You will find on and off options for the camera, you can flip the video 180 degrees, and toggle the indicator LED, mic, speaker, and automatic night vision. You can also use a power save mode to prolong battery life.

You can also use a power save mode to prolong battery life.

When it comes to indoor home security devices the Logi Circle can give you increased home security and family videos that hopefully won’t embarrass you or your kids. But if they are embarrassing you should put them on YouTube immediately.

If one of your primary wants is a camera with two-way audio Logi Circle has it. But it’s not as good as we would like it to be. There is no volume button, so if you are a soft speaker it is a challenge. You could always yell, but that may not go over well.

SimpliSafe

Why does everyone like SimpliSafe? Largely because they make DIY home security simple.

SimpliSafeThey also make it easy for you to be a customer.  And while they aren’t perfect, they can get the job done. When people (non-handy people like me) see DIY they tend to have two emotions; delight and terror.

I live on the terror side of things. And if you do too, that is okay. But when I tell you that you can install SimpliSafe’s equipment on your own, trust me. I did it myself.

And I once had a concussion from putting together an Ikea shelf. So if clumsy, awkward me can do it, you will be just fine.

Where DIY fails is when people think they know better than the instructions. Instructions exist for a reason. And SimpliSafe makes it super easy. All of the home security devices arrive pre-programmed, they are literally ready to go as soon as you plug them in.

Another reason people like SimpliSafe; no contract. No long document of terms and conditions you never read. I often think I have sold my soul to Apple, but I never read the terms and conditions so I will never know for sure.

But for real, no contract with SimpliSafe. You aren’t happy, just say peace out and leave, there is no cancellation fee. But if you decide to make a short term commitment to SimpliSafe you might start to like them. And who knows where it can go from there.

You will have to purchase the equipment up front. But once you do so it is yours. There are five different packages that you can choose from. If you need to start small, you can. But if you want to go big and buy it all, you can do that too.

These are the current packages that you can choose from.

Packages Equipment Provided Price
Starter Base Station, Wireless Keypad, 1 Motion Sensor, 1 Entry Sensor, Keychain Remote $229.96 Check Amazon
Economy Base Station, Wireless Keypad, 1 Motion Sensor, 3 Entry Sensors, Keychain Remote $259.95 Check Amazon
Classic Base Station, Wireless Keypad, 2 Motion Sensors, 3 Entry Sensors, Extra Siren, Smoke Detector, Keychain Remote $349.92 Check Amazon
Master Base Station, Wireless Keypad, 2 Motion Sensor, 6 Entry Sensors, Extra Siren, Smoke Detector, Keychain Remote $449.87 Check Amazon
Ultimate Base Station, Wireless Keypad, 2 Motion Sensor, 4 Entry Sensors, Extra Siren, Smoke Detector, Panic Button, Water Sensor, CO Detector, Freeze Sensor,Keychain Remote $539.85 Check Amazon

SimpliSafe recently added a home security camera, which was something we had long felt they were lacking. While it is not currently integrated into their equipment packages you can buy it $99. Which isn’t all that bad in terms of price.

You aren’t just limited to the packages, you can buy additional devices. Often you may have more doors and windows than you do sensors, so you can purchase what you need to make sure every access point to your home is covered.

If you aren’t interested in monitoring your own home security system you can purchase a monthly service from SimpliSafe.

They have two packages that you can choose from. You can get a Standard plan that covers your home 24/7 or for $24.99 you can add an interactive plan that will send you email and SMS alerts in addition to the 24/7 coverage.

If you choose the Interactive plan you will get some additional features. You can set up sensors that are in Alert Mode, which means that if the sensor is tripped it won’t contact the monitoring center, it will just send you an alert. These sensors work best on cabinets, they work great to keep your kids out of things they shouldn’t be into.

If you want to self-monitor you can do that. You will just need to have your smartphone available anytime you are away. You will get an alert when a sensor is triggered, and at that point, you will be the one that has to call law enforcement.

This is why we recommend the monitoring service. But we also respect your choices.

Frontpoint

First, you should know, we kind of love Frontpoint. And we aren’t ashamed to say it.

FrontpointSo why do we love them so much? Because they love their customers. And to us, that is a really big deal. Does this mean you have to love them? No. But we think you will.

With 96% of their customers willing to recommend Frontpoint (we are part of the 96%), it’s kind of hard to ignore the word of the people.  There are other things that make Frontpoint our preferred home security provider.

All of their equipment comes with a three-year warranty which means you don’t have to worry if a device stops working. You can also choose a contract term that works for you. The 3-year contract gives you the biggest discount, but if you aren’t ready for that you can choose a one or two-year option.

iSmartAlarm

iSmartAlarmNot all home security is made the same. If you have a larger than average home you can often find packages that don’t give you want you need.

That is why we like iSmartAlarm. They make it easy to protect every door and window in your home. Even if you have a lot of them.

iSmartAlarm uses a modular approach to home security. You can connect a variety of switches, sensors, cameras and other devices to build your own security system. So you can buy what you need in the amount you need.

Everything with iSmartAlarm is controlled using the CubeOne hub. The hub acts as the activities coordinator and manages all of the sensors and switches. While this may sound complicated, it is easier than you may think.

iSmartAlarm puts you in charge of your home security. You can choose where you place sensors and other devices. DIY is a great option if you want a highly customized home security system.

But before you place your order you need to know that this system is SELF-MONITORED. This means that everything runs through you. You will be notified by a push notification when a sensor is triggered. Once that happens you have to call the authorities.

If you are cool with that iSmartAlarm may be the perfect system for you. There are no monthly fees and no contracts.

You can also add as many sensors as you need. So if you have a lot of square footage you can make sure that your entire home is protected.

There are a few things that kind of bother us. First is the lack of a home monitoring option. It can be challenging to self-manage your home security, especially when you are away from home. While you will get notifications through the app, you will have to have your phone with you 24/7.

Another issue we have had is with the iCamera. While everything else is easy to set up, this camera is not. There are are some issues when you are connecting it to the CubeOne hub.

Why we still like them is the way they let you customize your home security. They make it easy to add home security devices. Size doesn’t matter to iSmartAlarm and we like them for that.

Smart Remote Outlets

You may be thinking, what do smart remote outlets have to do with home security?

Adding smart remote outlets allows you to turn things on and off when you aren’t at home. So if someone sees your lights come on in the evenings they will assume that someone is home. Which decreases the likelihood of someone breaking into you home.

They are an inexpensive way to keep your home protected when you aren’t home. They aren’t meant to substitute home security devices, they are just another tool to keep your home secure.

iHome ISP5 SmartplugWhen it comes to smart remote outlets, we recommend the iHome ISP5 Smartplug. It doesn’t cost much, but it lets you manage the plug from your smartphone. Using the app you can create a schedule to turn the plug on and off.

You can also connect the Smart plug to other devices in your home including the Wink hub, the Nest Learning Thermostat, and Alexa. So for a small investment, you can get some pretty big returns.

Voice Control Smart Hubs

If you want to build a formidable home security system you will need a way to manage it. And what better way than by asking your hub?

Both Google Home and Alexa have some real street cred when it comes to helping you manage your home security devices. Now, some devices don’t play well with them, but the ones that do can be managed just by asking.

I am biased here. It happens to all of us at some point, we find something we love and we want to tell the world. So I love Google Home. It is a deep and abiding love. And having had it for a few months, I can’t live without it.

It makes me coffee in the morning and turns my lights off at night. I mean what is better than that.

Google Home/Amazon AlexaGoogle is also better looking…

So when it comes to how you manage your home security devices using Google Home or Alexa, we will talk about both, it comes down to what they connect to. First, let’s look at what security devices play nice with Google:

  • Belkin WeMo: this allows you to turn your lights or appliance off with a voice command
  • IFTTT: this allows you to create recipes that can control your devices
  • Samsung SmartThings: you can connect home security devices via the hub and control them using Google Home.

When it comes to Alexa, these are the home security devices that you can control:

  • August Smart Lock: you can control the lock using voice commands
  • Scout Alarm: this is a big one, it allows you to control your security system
  • Netgear Arlo: you can use Alexa to manage your security camera
  • Ring Doorbell and Security Camera: same as the August lock

So while Alexa has a small advantage on home security devices, you can expect Google Home to continue to add new devices as well. But the Scout/Alexa connection is pretty cool.

Smart Thermostats & Detection Devices

I see the puzzled look in your eyes. Why are thermostats part of a home security device post? Because they belong here, and when you are done reading this, I think you will agree.

Home security isn’t always about some masked intruder breaking into your home and stealing your valuables.

Security means being free from danger or threat. But not all threats are obvious. So we want to help you to get some nonobvious devices that will keep you safe.

Nest Learning Thermostat

If you aren’t familiar with Nest, first you should know their thermostat has a lot to offer. This now brings us to the “this has something to do with home security because?” part of the review.

Ok, so let’s say you are away from home and your pipes burst. That would suck big time, especially if you were gone for a week.

Your floors would be damaged, your carpet destroyed. But with the Nest Thermostat, you would get an alert to let you know that the temperature in your house may cause your pipes to burst.

So you would know what to do BEFORE the pipes burst. Which is keeping your house safe. But that is not all Nest can do. They can work with your lights and locks as well. All Nest products are designed to work together, so they can help keep your home safe from internal threats.

Nest Protect

Nest Protect Smoke/CO detectorIn case you need more evidence that nest can keep your home safe, we bring you the Nest Protect. This nifty smoke/carbon monoxide detector can tell the difference between burned cookies and a fire. It comes packed with an industrial level smoke sensor, which can test itself.

You can also get alerts on your smartphone should the Nest Protect detect smoke. So you can know what is taking place and take action.

The average fire takes only 5 minutes to take over a room.

With the Nest Protect alerts, you have better odds of containing a fire before it gets out of control. You also get a CO detector. Carbon Monoxide cannot be seen, smelled or tasted, which means in the event of a leak you will never know its happening unless you have a CO detector.

Nest Protect does double duty to keep your home and family protected. So if you weren’t sure about how some unobvious devices could keep your home safe, now you can add more devices to your list.

What You Need to Get to Keep Your DIY from Becoming DOA

If you are going pure DIY that means that you will need to purchase sensors and detection devices. Sensors are what make your home security system work effectively. Sure cameras can record an intruder, but sensors sound the alarm and send alerts.

As sensors become smarter, they make the DIY home security system less reliant on external solutions, like professional monitoring services. Now, around these parts, we do love us some professional monitoring, but if you don’t we are cool with that.

If you are going to build your own home security system from the ground up, there are some devices that are a must have.

  • Motion sensors: you should attach motion sensors to your doors and windows. If someone tries to open a window, the sensor will sound an alarm.  But if you aren’t home you won’t hear it. We recommend you invest in smarter sensors. Sensors shouldn’t be standalone, they should connect with a hub that will send you a text or email when a sensor sounds an alarm.
  • Motion detectors: these are different from motion sensors. They can sense when a person or your dog is moving. Sensors just let you know when someone opens something. Motion detectors can let you know when something is moving in the area the detector is placed.
  • Smart motion sensors and detectors: while basic sensors and motion detectors can do basic things, making them smarter will make your life easier. You won’t have to wonder what is happening at your home when you have smarter devices.
    • Smart sensors & detectors: the biggest thing that smart sensors and detectors can do is communicate. They can communicate with a hub, or even with one another. They can also communicate with you via a smartphone app. So should something set off an alarm, you will know and be able to take the appropriate course of action.

Why You Should Invest in Home Security Devices

Whether you choose to add a service from a provider or you want to forge your own way and build your home security your way. The most important thing is that you are keeping your home and your family safe.

Everyone should have some sort of home security system.

There are a lot of reasons we don’t do things. From financial reasons to the fear of looking stupid in the home security section of the Home Depot (this is why I order stuff online). Regardless of the reason, you should always keep your home secure.

If you are a DIY kind of person, there are a lot of cool options out there for you. Or if you aren’t (one I feel you) and two you can get your friends or a paid professional, don’t worry we can keep a secret. If you are new to DIY these are some tips to help you get started.

Get a New Front Door

Okay, so maybe this isn’t technically a “device” but it is important. Most homes don’t have a door that is adequate enough to stop someone from kicking the door in. If you don’t have a solid door, you should consider adding one. The front door is where most break-ins take place, so adding a solid door can help keep your home secure.

You don’t want to buy an expensive lock if someone can just kick your door in.

Add Some Outdoor Lighting

If you don’t want to add a device like the Kuna or Netgear Arlo, you should at least considered adding some muscle to the outside of the house. Adding lights with motion sensors can be a great way to scare off someone trying to get in.

Pay a Professional Installer

You know what sucks? You spend your day on a ladder putting in a security camera that comes crashing down twenty minutes later. Don’t let your ego destroy your smart home security devices.

Look, there is no shame in not being handy. You are awesome in other ways. You don’t have anything to prove. We like you just the way you are. So hire someone who knows how to install your stuff. It will help you sleep at night.

Smart Home Security devices that can keep things safe when you are on vacation.

We all love vacation. We plan for it, wait for it and cannot wait to run out of the house and get on our way. Which means we forget things. Before you go on vacation, you need to make sure that you will have a plan that will keep your home safe.

If you have someone you trust that can keep an eye on things, that is awesome. If you don’t, or you don’t trust anyone, here are a few things you can add, and do to keep your home from being broken into.

Things You Should Do

If you love checklists like I love checklists, here is a good one for you to follow:

  • Stop your mail: if you are going to be gone for more than two days you should stop delivery. Nothing says nobody is home like a stuffed mailbox. This also covers any newspaper deliveries.
  • Have someone check on things: if you have a neighbor you like and trust ask them to check for any fliers on your door and remove them. If you don’t have any neighbors you like you may want to make a friend before you leave. It’s cheaper than paying someone to do it.
  • Look like you are home: you can purchase inexpensive remote outlets and timers that can turn your light and television on and off.  This will make it look like you are home.
  • Hire someone to mow the lawn: If you are going to be gone for more than a few days it worth it to make sure you look like you are home.
  • Don’t advertise that you are away: Tweeting or posting on FB can wait until you are home. If you have lots of followers you are literally telling them you aren’t home so come rob me. There will be plenty of time to make them jealous when you get home.

Things You Should Buy

I know, you are going on vacation and you don’t want to spend money. But if you buy just a few devices that can let you turn your lights and television on from your smartphone, trust me it will be more than worth it.

For around 35 bucks you can get the WeMo Mini Smart Plug, it’s Wi-Fi enables and works with both Alexa and Google home. And true to its name it’s pretty darn smart. You can control it from your smartphone, you just need to leave the Wi-Fi on.

You can set schedules that can turn different lights and devices at set times. It can even work with your Nest Thermostat. So if you don’t have your lights and appliances automated yet, this is an inexpensive way to manage your home while you are away.

In Conclusion

You need home security. And if you have a few devices, you most likely don’t have everything you need. There is a lot of stuff in your house that you really like. So protecting your home, family, and stuff is a good idea and a sound investment.

You can start small and add new devices when you can. But you need to start. Even if you replace the lock or a door, you will be on your way to making sure everything you love is safe. Everyone has at least one thing they would hate to lose, so make sure you have what you need to keep the things you cherish most safe and sound.
