Bright House by Spectrum Review 2017
Bright House Networks is a security and cable company selling their services under the Spectrum brand (previously known as Bright House). The company is owned by Charter Communications LLC, a corporate giant which is present in 41 States with 25 million subscribers, making it the second-largest cable provider in the country. Bright House Networks is headquartered in Syracuse, New York and has 2.5 million monthly subscribers. They have a limited coverage area and provide, voice, video and security services in only Michigan, Alabama, California, Florida, and Indiana.
The Good
The company provides 24/7 professional monitoring services, and latest security equipment which can be remotely accessed through any mobile device. This is particularly helpful for busy individuals who are away at work, on business trips or holidays. Users have a wide variety of wireless equipment to choose from such as motion detectors, touch screen panels, and indoor cameras.
The system is fully automated and sends alert notifications through emails and text messages. In the case of an emergency, the security system automatically signals local police authorities to take action as soon as possible.
One of the biggest advantages of Bright House Networks is their minimum contract length of only 12 months, far less than the industry average of 3-5 years. Another advantage is the fact that all system settings can be customized according to the requirements of each customer, providing tailored solutions for varying needs.
Their services are also highly reliable and well maintained since all monitoring is performed on the company’s own wireless broadband network.
The Bad
Customers face a lot of ambiguity when it comes to fees and charges. For example, the company promotes a basic security plan for residential users but does not clearly mention how this plan actually provides limited security options. For a normal-sized family home, customers would need to buy extra equipment in order to adequately protect their property which can mean up to $125 extra charges in upfront costs.
Furthermore, customers who are simply wishing to move their current equipment to a new location would need to pay extra in re-installation costs. The exact amount of this re-installation cost is not disclosed on the company’s website. If a customer chooses to prematurely terminate a contract, they will need to pay for uninstallation as well as $375 if the equipment is not returned immediately.
Other problems with the billing occur every year when alarm permits are renewed and costs added to customers’ bill without any prior notice. A pattern emerges of overcharging customers and downplaying costs that might incur on top of the basic package.
As far as equipment warranties are concerned, the company has not publicly mentioned anything on their website, which is contrary to industry norms. They also do not offer money-back guarantees on any of their products or services, something that might deter new customers from trying their services.
Bright House Network also suffers from a very limited coverage. The company only covers the city of Bakersfield in California, Detroit in Michigan, Indianapolis in Indiana, Birmingham, Eufaula and Elmore in Alabama and Panhandle, Tampa Bay and Central Florida areas in the State of Florida. With only 9 areas covered in 5 states, services hardly reach 5 percent of the US population.
Bottom Line
Bright House provides the advantage of an established company with a well-maintained infrastructure and quality products to choose from. However, the company’s ambiguous billing and high upfront costs of extra equipment and installation might put off some customers who are looking for the cheapest option.
Monitoring Plans and Pricing
The company does not service commercial properties and their products are tailored especially for the residential market. Home Security and Control system plans start from $32 per month. Depending on the size of the property and customer requirements, additional equipment can be purchased at the following rates:
- Door & Window Sensor – $40
- Motion Detector – $75
- Key Fob – $60
- Indoor Camera – $110
- Smoke Detector – $80
- Carbon Monoxide Detector – $85
- Glass Break Detector – $125
- Flood Detector -$60
- Thermostat Control – $110
- Wireless Keypad – $80
- Appliance Adapter – $50
- Lamp Adapter – $50
Features
The Home Security and Control System comes with:
- Touch screen, to monitor and control the system
- Window decals, to alert potential intruders
- One Yard sign, in order to alert potential intruders
- One motion detector
- 27/4 Managed Home Security system
- Modem and router for secure wireless connectivity
- An option of either two door or window sensors
- All the above equipment and features are inclusive as long as the customer is paying the monthly contract bill
The additional equipment offered by the company can provide the following features:
Remote Video Surveillance Monitoring: Customers are able to view live feeds from all cameras via any mobile device.
Burglary Monitoring: The company provides door and window sensors which can detect intrusions and automatically alert local authorities.
Flood Monitoring: Customers even have the option to install flood sensors for early detection in order to minimize property damage.
Fire, Smoke, and Carbon Monoxide Monitoring: Fire and smoke detectors can be installed which can automatically signal local response teams in case of an emergency. Sensors can also monitor dangerous levels of carbon monoxide within the property and immediately alert the property owner.
Arming and Disarming the System: Once the equipment is set-up, a user can monitor everything from their mobile device, including receiving notifications, alerts, updates and the power to completely arm or disarm the security system.
Equipment Options
All equipment by the company, including, security cameras, sensors, locks, and alarms are wireless and can be monitored from a mobile device. The company does not provide equipment from any other well-established brand, instead selling all hardware under their own name.
Customer Support
Support is available 24/7 via email, phone, and live chat, however, customer support reviews have been particularly poor. There have been repeated complaints about account mismanagement, unhelpful representatives and long waiting times before issues are resolved.
Contract Details
The company provides a relatively short 12-month contract obligation. The basic plan starts from $32/month but additional equipment will cost much more in upfront fees. If a customer wishes to discontinue the services before the contract ends, they will need to pay uninstallation costs.
Review Summary
Being a small part of a large organization, Bright House Network suffers from a very limited coverage area of only 9 cities in 5 US States. The company provides poor customer service which is frustrating for people looking for robust residential security. Inefficient bill management, overcharging, no warranties and guarantees and tons of hidden costs are problems which might be hard to overlook for many.
At $32 per month, it is also not the cheapest option available on the market. Customers do have the option to buy additional equipment and develop a truly bespoke security system for their house, but that can increase the upfront costs by hundreds of dollars.
The only attraction for the first-time user is it’s relatively short,12-month contract obligation, which can convince many to give it a shot.

GEOARM Review 2017
Founded in 1999, GEOARM provides do-it-yourself security solutions as well as serviced installation for monitoring and alarm systems. The company has headquarters in West Palm Beach, Florida and is a division of AlarmClub. GEOARM provides specialized solutions for businesses and homes which can be integrated with wireless systems, computers, and smartphones. Services are available in all 50 States of the US including Hawaii, Alaska, and District of Columbia.
The Good
GEOARM is quite affordable with monthly fees starting from as low as $8. The company even provides a no-contract obligation on most of their equipment, enabling customers to easily cancel a subscription with a 30-day notice. Another innovative business model is their $0 down option which lets customers forego hundreds of dollars in upfront costs. One of the biggest advantages of GEOARM is their free lifetime technical support service available via phone and email to all customers.
The Bad
If a customer opts for a no-contract package, they will need to pay anywhere from $200 to $500 in upfront equipment costs. On the other hand, if they go for the $0 down option, they will be bound to a 36-month contract obligation with the equipment always remaining the property of the company. Another drawback is that GEOARM provides equipment warranty of only one or two years whereas most of the big players in the industry provide lifetime warranties on all hardware.
Bottom line
GEOARM provides a wide variety of brands and equipment to choose from. Their DIY solutions come with a no-contract and easy cancellation policy, which will make it an attractive option for new customers. Their 36-month contract comes with $0 down, which in itself is a good trade-off considering a customer can save up to $500 in initial costs.

Scout Home Wireless Security Review 2017
If you are looking for a home security system that is both smart and simple, Scout may be exactly what you need. The founder of Scout, Noah Ney was tired of trying to find a home security system that wasn’t outdated. So he set about creating a system that was not only modern but also affordable.
He wanted you to be able to choose the equipment you wanted, and not have to pay for packages that may have devices you don’t want or need.
Scout Equipment
Device | Price |
---|---|
Scout Hub | $129 |
Door Panel | $69.00 |
Access Sensor | $29.00 |
Motion Sensor | $49.00 |
Scout includes the core of what you need to have a complete home security system. It’s also easy to install and comes with some useful items, like battery backups. It may look simple, but it is smarter than it looks.
It is also quite intuitive. With a highly functional mobile app, you can manage your home security by tapping on an option. You can arm and disarm the system, or just change a devices mode. You can also create custom alerts that will be sent in the event an alarm is triggered. So if you want Scout to email you if a window is open, you can set an alert and make it so.
You can also give other users access to your system. So if you have a trusted neighbor, you can give them access to manage your system while you are on vacation. Because no conga line should be interrupted by an alert from your security system.
Scout gives you lots of options. You can choose how you receive your alerts and push notifications. The alarm itself has a siren that is 106 decibels according to the company. While the sound will obviously lessen the further it extends from the siren, it is still a sufficient sound that can alert you that an event has occurred.
Your Scout Alarm connects to your router using the standard ethernet cable. In addition to providing a battery backup, you also get an internet backup, which means that you never have to worry about an alert being missed by the monitoring station.
How to Set Up Scout
I could go on and on and on about how difficult it is to put your Scout system together. But that would be a lie. If you follow the tutorials on the app you can have that puppy up and running in 10-15 minutes. So if you have a short attention span…what were we talking about…oh if you lose focus easily Scout is the system you need.
You just plug the Scout hub into your router, it will connect itself to the devices that came in your package. You also get some deterrents, like yard and window signs. You should have window and door sensors, a motion detector, two key-fobs and a door panel.
You also get a RFID (radio-frequency identification) tag. You can place this on a device that you want o monitoring. Like a wine chiller, or a cabinet.
You don’t need a touchscreen or keypad to arm or disarm your system with Scout. You just need to have the key-fob with you, it works with the system to make entry and exit from your home easy.
Additional Equipment
There are some non-Scout devices that can play well with your system. For example, if you have an Amazon Echo device you can use voice commands to check on your system. You just need to ask Alexa if you left a window option. Now if only she would go and close it for you.
And what doesn’t work with Nest? Nest is the most friendly company, it is always going to like your post on Facebook and it lets you monitor the temperature in your house, Nest cam is also being incorporated into the Scout system which is some sweet news.
IFTTT (If This Than That) will be available soon so you can use it to create “recipes” that automate Scout to connect with other smart devices.
Monitoring Services
You will need to choose a plan with Scout, but with only two options it’s easy to select the one that will work best for you. These are your options:
Always On Features
- Email notifications
- Scout mobile app for iOS and Android
- Push notifications to mobile device
- 4G LTE cellular and battery backup
- SMS Alerts
- No Annual Contract
Always On+ Features
- Email notifications
- Scout mobile app for iOS and Android
- Push notifications to mobile device
- 4G LTE cellular and battery backup
- SMS Alerts
- No annual contract
- 24/7 professional monitoring service
Scout provides 2/7 professional monitoring using UL-certified monitoring systems that will dispatch the police should a sensor or motion detector trigger an alarm.
- The app allows you to control your Scout devices from anywhere
- Connects with Amazon Echo, Nest and soon IFTTT
- Equipment has a one year warranty
- You get everything you need to put together a solid home security system
- It is easy to install
- No Contract
- You will need to choose a monitoring option
In Conclusion
If you are new to home security, Scout is a company you should absolutely check out. They make it easy for you to have a solid home security system without the hassle of some other DIY providers. While we would like to see a longer warranty period as three years becoming the new normal. We can live with the one-year that they currently provide.
Once installed managing your Scout system is pleasantly simple. You can arm and disarm your alarm and manage your camera. You can also connect devices from Nest and Amazon Echo. With Echo, you can control your system using voice commands, which makes things hella easy.
The integration of IFTTT will allow you to connect a wider variety of devices. You will also be able to create recipes (rules) for the devices. You can tell them when to turn on and off, and you can even have them work with other devices.
We like Scout. So if you are looking for a reasonably priced home security system with potential, you may have met your perfect match.

Security One Review 2017
Security One Alarm Systems is relatively new. But that hasn’t stopped them from growing. They are now one of the largest home security providers in the US. They have location in the majority of major cities, which gives them a pretty decent footprint.
Beyond their quick expansion, they also have some creative features. The first being a Security Takeover package that adapts to your existing home security devices. Security One promises that they can provide you with a better rate than your current provider. And if they can’t they commit to upgrading your system for you.
You can find what devices they can “takeover”, they also have 24/7 monitoring, a life time warranty and a locked in rate with this package.
Current Plans
One thing that we do know about Security One is that they do not charge an installation fee. Which is pretty sweet. It lets you get your home security system in place and save some money.
These are the current packages that are offered by Security One.
Packages | Security Takeover | Simply Security | Energy Plus | Ultimate Home |
---|---|---|---|---|
Lifetime Warranty | ||||
Rate Will Never Raise | ||||
Yard Sign | ||||
Siren | ||||

Motion Detectors | ||||
Remote Control | ||||
Light Control | ||||
Thermostat | ||||

Equipment
Security One has a pretty decent line up when it comes to equipment. You can choose from two different control panels and add additional devices that include thermostats, door and window sensors, motion sensors, image sensors, smoke & heat sensors, glass break sensors, carbon monoxide detectors, wireless cameras, light and appliance controls, panic pendants, wireless door locks. and key-chain remotes.
There are some things to like about Security One, you don’t need to pay for the equipment up front, and there is no installation fee.
Security Takeover
Security One can take over some of your existing equipment, which could save you money. But it is hard to tell given the lack of any substantial data on their website. With limited information on prices, you will need to call them to get a better understanding of what “takeover” means.
Monitoring Services
This is another area where additional information is helpful. While Security One says they have a highly rated monitoring system, there is nothing on their site about locations or ratings. So it’s possible they have an amazing monitoring center or not.
Contract
Regardless of the package you will need to sign a minimum contract of 36 months. While other home security providers are looking at shorter contracts, Security One is still married to the idea of the 36 month agreement.
Security One App
Reviews for Security One and their app can be hard to find. They seem to be missing the whole social media thing. While they do have an app, its limited. It doesn’t include Geofencing options, or crash and smash protection. Which are becoming more popular among their competitors.
In Conclusion
Security One has some decent features, but given the limited amount of information on their site you will have to call their sales department to know what they do. I find the lack of their transparency disturbing. It shouldn’t take a phone call to learn basic information about the services they offer.
They also lack some of the most popular features that are common among most home security providers. Their app is basic and doesn’t give you a lot of control. I would encourage you to call Security One if you want to learn more about them, as the information on their site is sparse, or non-existent.

SafeStreets USA Review 2017
SafeStreets USA is one of the oldest and most well-established ADT dealers in the country. They have been operating for 25 years, selling and installing only ADT systems.
With the help of over 300 full-time trained installation consultants, the company is active in 44 States, covering 90% of the US population. In order to adequately provide services all over the country, SafeStreets USA works with two main branches, one known as the Eastern Main Office in Garner, North Carolina, and another office called the Western Main office in Kent, Washington.
Currently, SafeStreets USA does not provide services in Alaska, Hawaii, Wyoming, Montana, North Dakota and South Dakota.
The Good
The company is known for excellent customer service with 99% of all installation consultants reaching a new customer within 1 hour of a call. Consultants survey a property before deciding on the best options for strategic camera angles, ensuring maximum security coverage.
Once the system is set-up consultants educate and train customers on how to the use their security consoles. Their products are also known to be at the forefront of technology and their voice-activated systems, backup batteries, and six-month money back guarantee on installation are huge plus point.
The Bad
SafeStreets USA offers their first-time customers a minimum 36-month contract. If a customer is dissatisfied with the service for any reason, they will need to pay 75% of the total amount upfront as a cancellation fee, along with the return of all security equipment installed on the property.
Compared to an industry average of a 12-month contract and a 20% cancellation fee, SafeStreetsUSA is far more expensive.
There are also some ambiguities on certain service costs e.g. the company does not clearly mention what they charge on moving and re-installing their equipment to a new property. Also, SafeStreets USA is a reseller for ADT products and except for the large coverage and customer service, there is not much of a difference between the products of both companies.
The Bottom Line
SafeStreets USA is not the cheapest security service provider but its large coverage area and quick installation services have helped it grow all over the country.
Their ADT equipment is also top-of-the-line but if you are working on a tight budget, you might want to look elsewhere. They do provide a free quote so we recommend calling them to see how much they might cost you.
Monitoring Plans and Pricing
The company provides a wide range of monitoring plans suited to various needs and requirements:
Medical Alert Monitoring: This is a small keypad which a user can keep close by. In the case of a medical emergency, a user can alert a predetermined person or services to arrive.
Flood Monitoring: In the case of a flood, a sensor will detect rising water levels, automatically contacting concerned authorities to get help as soon as possible.
Temperature Monitoring: This monitor controls the thermostat and the amount of energy being consumed at a property. The controls are even voice-activated for easy use.
Burglary Monitoring: In the case of an intrusion, the advanced security system (which consists of sensors on doors, windows, and other openings) alerts the property owners and the police.
Carbon Monoxide Monitoring: Users can monitor Carbon Monoxide levels at a property and in the case of a leak or detection of high levels in the air, an alarm will go off to alert the occupants. This is especially useful in case of a fire hazard that can be extremely dangerous if immediate action is not taken.
Fire and Smoke Monitoring: In the event that a fire does light up, the smoke detector will sound the alarm and the fire department will be called in automatically.
Pricing of the packages are as follows:
- Standard: $36.99/month
- Premium Cellular: $44.99/month
- ADT Pulse Tier I Remote Access: $52.99/month
- ADT Pulse Tier II + Video Security: $58.99/month

SafeStreets USA provides several packages to choose from with variations in features, hardware and pricing.
The Standard package features include:

Equipment Options
The equipment options are a landline, wireless networking and cellular.
Customer Support
SafeStreets USA provides an active customer support service through email and phone. Instead of using automated machines, they use actual customer service representatives to answer calls and reply to emails. Unfortunately, customers have complained about their helpline, with comments on how the customer support representatives are not well versed in the details of the product and can hardly provide help when needed.
Contract Details
A minimum contract length is 36-months which is exactly three years. If a customer wants to discontinue the services for any reason, they will have to pay 75 percent of the amount upfront and return all hardware equipment. Furthermore, the contract prices can also be subjected to an increment over the course of 36 months.
SafeStreets Review Summary
SafeStreets USA has received mixed reviews from various customers who have tried their services in the past. Customers complain about the fact that it is too expensive and they regularly get overbilled through miscellaneous charges every other month without prior notice. The helpline makes this worse, as it consistently fails to provide substantial information on why customers are overcharged.
On the other hand, installation consultants are said to be quite professional at their given task. They explain things with the utmost patience, walk the purchaser through the whole set up, answer questions patiently and provide any additional information that might make the transition easy for the customer.
Overall, SafeStreets USA is not for everyone. It is not the lowest priced player in the market but it does provide reliable and high-quality services and products which, for some people, justifies the premium pricing. On the other hand, people who are looking for budget or entry-level solutions might be put-off by their contract length, pricing, and weak customer support.

1st Security Review 2017
1st Security is a family owned and operated business. They provide customized solutions to their customers. They want to give you a system that works for you, which is kind of refreshing. So you won’t get a box of devices and not know what to do with them.
You can choose between professional installation and a DIY option, so if you are handy you can save a little money.
In addition to offering home security, they also provide home automation services using Z-wave devices. Because they customize solutions based on what the customer needs, there is a variety of devices that are available. This is a current list of devices:
Keypads
- Qolysys 7″ IQ Touchscreen Keypad
- Easy to read: you can touch to arm or disarm
- Built-in camera: takes a picture when you disarm
- Updates regularly
- Voice notification: will alert you when a door or window is opened
- Touch alarms: contact police, fire and ambulance service on the keypad
- Duress code: you can send a silent alarm if there is an intruder.
- Smash and crash: if someone tries to destroy the keypad it will automatically contact the monitoring system
- GIG Touchscreen Keypad
- Color Touch Screen Display
- Self-Contained
- 48 Wireless Zones
- 32 User Codes
- Built in Z-Wave
Security Sensors
- Door/Window Sensor: you can attach your IQ door/window sensor to the inside of any door or window
- Motion: should your sensors fail to catch someone trying to break in, the IQ motion has your back. The IQ motion detector can detect infrared heat in bodies over 40 pounds, which means should you be robbed by a toddler it wouldn’t detect them, but everyone else it could. It has a range of up to 35 feet and can be installed a few ways. You can choose to cover an entire room or set a pet sensitive position, which would allow your pets under 40 lbs to roam freely without setting an alarm off.
- Glass Break: the IQ Glass can set off an alarm when it is triggered by the pitch and frequency of breaking glass. They will work within 25′ of windows.
- Smoke Detector: IQ Smoke connects with your IQ panel and will monitor your home 24/7. Your system doesn’t have to be armed for IQ Smoke to work. By using photoelectric technology it can send smoke earlier than older detectors.
- Carbon Monoxide Detectors: Carbon monoxide is undetectable for humans, but with this CO detector you will be protected from danger. It is always on and will immediately alert you should the device detect a leak.
- Flood Sensor: You can know if a pipe bursts or if you have a leak in your water heater. It can even tell you when the neighbor is over watering his lawn, so you can yell at him over the fence. If the IQ Flood sensor detects water it will shoot over a notification.
- Garage Overhead Door: It is easy to forget about your garage door, but burglars know that one of the easiest ways to enter your house is your garage. So when you are adding devices this is one that you should not forget.
- Image Sensor: The Image Sensor is a motion detector that is built into a still camera. The device can detect movement in a range of up to 40′. It can also be set to detect your pets, which will save you from coming home from work because the cat wanted to be in the window. The sensor will send you a picture (maybe of the cat) to your mobile device.
Mobile Apps
1st Security USA makes it easy to be in control of your systems wherever you are. You can arm and disarm, checking the status of your alarm, receive notifications, control your lights, thermostats and garage doors.
These are the current devices that support apps:
- Apple Watch
- Apple TV
- Amazon Fire TV
- Amazon Echo
At the current time, there are no Android devices that are supported by the app.
Security Cameras
1st Security has a variety of security cameras that you can choose from. You can keep track of your kids, your pets, and your belongings. You can get a full suite of home security devices that give you everything you need. You will be able to view live streaming video, review clips in the cloud, receive instant video alerts and view continuous high definition recordings.
Live Streaming Video
- You will have high-quality HD video that is crystal clear even in low light
- You can integrate with your existing video cameras
- By using multiple cameras you can see more than one location on a screen
- You can also use your smartphone or tablet to remotely move pan/tilt cameras which let you manage what you see.
Video Alerts
- You can create triggers to start recording when activity is detected.
- If a door opens and an alarm goes off you can get a notification.
- You can set triggers by motion, time, day or camera
- You can choose how you receive notifications, you can choose to get them by text or email.
Smart Clip Capture
- You can see a more comprehensive view with pre and post alarm footage
- You can save clips to a searchable library
- When you are home you can turn off recording and set it to start when you will be aware
Continuous Recording
- You can capture high definition video 24/7 with Alarm.com’s continuous recording feature
- You have access to streaming video clip files from anywhere
Wi-Fi Doorbell Camera
Now you can also get a doorbell camera when you choose 1st Security. It has an integrated camera, PIR motion sensor, and digital mic and speaker. You can answer the door, or speak to visitors using the two-way audio
Existing Security Systems
1st Security has an interesting way of helping their customers with their existing security devices. If you don’t want to upgrade your security system they will still monitor your existing equipment. They refer to this as a take over because they are kind of taking over your existing devices and managing them for you.
The other option you have is a trade out which is an upgrade option. 1st security will replace your existing keypad wth a newer one but they will still use any existing door/window sensors, motion detectors, and glass break detectors if you have them.
This lets you benefit from some newer devices and still save money by using the existing equipment you already have in place. It is nice when a company tries to help you save money by using your existing devices rather than forcing you to buy an entirely new home security system.
Monitoring Services
1st Security USA offers three graduated plans, each offer professional monitoring and basic features. As you raise the level of your service you will also have access to video services, which include live streaming video. You can also add additional devices like a doorbell camera.
These are the current packages that are available.

Cox HomeLife Home Security Review 2017
Imagine coming home and finding your front door open and most of your valuables gone. This happens to someone almost every minute. But most of us still don’t invest in a home security system.
Within minutes an experienced burglar can break into your home. Taking the things you love and destroying your piece of mind. So how do you keep yourself safe?
Adding a home security system can reduce your chance of having a break-in. Homes without a home security system are up to 300% more likely to have a break-in.
Cox Homelife offers you 24/7 monitoring services and an internet based home security solution for your home. The catch is you either have to be an existing Cox customer, or you need to become one.
So if you have a cable and internet company you love, you may need to think long and hard before breaking up with them.
Should you chose to move on to Cox you will find yourself in a 24-month commitment. Even if you only get the security service and not the home automation package. So if you find like a month in you hate it, you will have to pay 80% of the remaining contract should you leave.
Even if you have been the most loyal Cox customer in the history of the company, you will still have to pay for installation of your new home security system. When you get your home security device installed you will only have a 90-day warranty on the equipment. Which is skimpy compared to other providers.
I am not trying to talk you out of this, I promise. I just want to make sure you know what to expect.
There are some positives, Homelife Essential is an affordable package, and if you are already a customer you can get a $10 discount.
There are two packages that Cox offers for home security and home automation.
Features | Essential | Preferred |
---|---|---|
24/7 Professional Monitoring | ||
Battery and Cellular Backup | ||
Smoke/Heat Detection** | ||
Water/Flood Monitoring | ||
Carbon Monoxide Monitoring | ||
Lock/Unlock Doors | ||
Access using Touchscreen Pad, Web Portal or Mobile App | ||
Receive Text/Email Alerts | ||
Live/Recorded Video | ||
24-hour Continuous Video Recording | ||
Turn Appliances Off | ||
Turn Lights On/Off | ||
Adjust Thermostat |
Which package you choose will determine the devices you get. A few other nice features include a battery back-up and a cellular back-up that can keep your home security system functioning even when you lose power.
You can also add additional devices like if you have more than three windows you can add more sensors. You can also purchase glass-break sensors, wireless keypads, and a siren repeater, which will serve as a secondary alarm.
When it comes to home automation there are a few cool things you can do. You can turn your lights on and off, and lock and unlock doors you can also adjust the temperature in your house and control small appliances.
One of the benefits of adding a home security system to your existing cable and internet company is that it makes it easier to get started on building a smart home. It is also nice to have a professional installer help you get things up and running.
On the downside, Cox isn’t known for having a stellar record when it comes to customer service. They are often at the bottom of the list. While that shouldn’t stop you from adding their home security service it is something that you should be aware of.
You also have to make a commitment to them, a two-year contract may seem short, but should you find yourself unhappy with their service that 80% cancellation fee will still be applicable. So before you decide we just want you to know what is both good and bad.
Adding a home security system is always a great idea. It keeps your home and your family safe and gives you peace of mind. And if you are an existing Cox customer this is a great way to get started.
- 24/7 professional monitoring services
- You can manage your home security using the web, smartphone or tablet
- You don’t have to pay for your equipment unless you add additional devices that are not in the package that you choose.
- Their contract is shorter than others at just 24 months
- You can save money by bundling your service
- Professional installation by backgrounded checked employees
- You will pay for installation and activation even if you are an existing customer.
- You have to use Cox Internet
- They “rent” you a touchscreen panel that you have to return at the end of your contract
- Cox doesn’t provide crash and smash protection
- The service is not nationwide

Best Home Security Devices for 2017
You want to keep your home safe, which is awesome.
But how do you know what home security devices or systems are best for you?
You could spend your day searching site after site to compile a list of the best ones. Or you could let me do it for you.
In fact, I have already done it. So now instead of spending your day on the internet, you can go out and have some fun. You deserve some time in the sun. Just don’t forget the sunblock.
If you haven’t noticed there are LOTS of home security devices and systems to choose from. But before you buy anything you need to know what you want. We no longer live in a world where there are just a few home security providers.
Today there are hundreds, maybe thousands, of companies that want to help you keep your home secure. If that sounds overwhelming, it is. This is why you need to know what kind of home security devices you want before you buy.
But what if you don’t know what you need?
Relax, you have homesecuritylist.com. We love this stuff. Call us a bunch of dorks but we genuinely want to help you find the best way to keep your home safe.
So, now you can worry less. We are your home security Yoda. Find home security you will. Sorry, I couldn’t stop myself. The force is strong with this blog…okay I will stop now. Maybe.
How to Know What you Want in a Home Security System
If you are new to home security it can be frustrating when you are trying to compare devices and services. So before we get started on what devices are out there, let’s start with the different forms that home security systems come in.
Monitored or Not Monitored
This first one is pretty simple. Do you want a professional monitoring service, or do you want to be responsible for your system? The difference between the two options depends really on how committed you can be to managing your own home security.
A monitored service will watch your house 24/7, rain or shine. If you don’t add a monitored service you will be the one watching your house 24/7, rain or shine. This also includes during vacations, and business trips.
You will be the monitoring system.
You can buy devices that can send you alerts if something should trigger a motion detection device. But you would still be you that has to call the authorities to let them know that something is taking place in your home.
That is why when it comes to your home security we recommend using a professional monitoring service. You will have to pay an added fee for the service but you will always know that your home is being protected.
But if you like the idea of self-monitoring, we understand. So we will show you devices and systems that come with a professional service and some that don’t.
Professional Installation or DIY
This is where you need to figure out how handy you are or how handy you want to be. First, there is no shame in not being handy. Not everyone knows what to do with a drill.
If everyone knew how to install their own stuff, there would be no professional installers. So if don’t know a Phillips head from a slot head screwdriver you are not alone.
You could also buy a DIY system and then hire someone on the side to install it. We won’t tell anyone. But if you are the mayor of DIY, then you should be right at home putting your home security system in place.
We can’t say enough about how important keeping your home secure is. Regardless of what you choose keeping your home and family safe should always be the number one priority.
Our Favorite DIY Outdoor Home Security Devices
Kuna Light Fixture
If you want a clever porch light that can keep an eye on things, the Kuna Light Fixture is what you need. It looks like an elegant light fixture, but on the inside, it is a home security camera and a good one at that. With 720p HD live video, motion detection and two-way audio this inconspicuous camera is a great outdoor security device.
You can also get cloud recording, but you do have to pay for it. It starts at $60 per year. You also have to install it yourself (or pay someone to do it for you). There are some things that you sacrifice for a pleasant face. The Kuna lacks night vision, and it cannot integrate with other third-party devices.
But I think the worst is that you only get a 2-hour free storage period for video recordings. This is far less than most of the other competitors, they typically allow a 24-hour period. If you don’t like the style of the craftsman, you can choose a more tradition design.
Maximus Smart Home Security Outdoor Light & Camera - Craftsman Bronze - Works with Amazon Alexa, Kuna
$179.00
amazon.com
Description
Amazon Alexa can now control your Kuna powered smart lights! Kuna is a smart home security camera in a stylish outdoor light that detects and allows you to interact with people outside your door; The security device includes HD live and recorded video, two-way intercom, alarm, smart motion...
Kuna Toucan
While we are talking about cameras, and Kuna, we should mention the Toucan. Much like the original Kuna, the Toucan has a simple discreet design that most likely won’t catch the attention of a would-be intruder.
There is a lot packed into the Toucan, it has HD video resolution and a motion sensor. Other features include two-way audio and cloud storage. You can use the Toucan in place of an existing light. Its designed to retrofit to your existing outdoor lights.
One thing that would be nice to see is if Kuna could take the leap and integrate with other devices from other companies. It is so nice when things work together. But for now, you just have to settle for just having a camera that doubles as an outdoor light, or vice versa.
Either way, you are adding a lighting feature that can record video. Which is kind of James Bondish when you think about it. The Toucan will require a light bulb, but other than that it is pretty easy to install. I did it, and I am not handy. At all.
There are a few things that we wish they would add, like night vision. It just seems like they are missing something that almost every outdoor camera has.
Kuna Smart Home Security Outdoor Light & Camera - Traditional Bronze - Works with Amazon Alexa, Kuna

Description

Netgear Arlo Pro
Arlo Pro is arguably the best outdoor security device you could have. It is weatherproof, waterproof and wireless. Which makes it an ideal camera to keep an eye on the outside of your house. While it doesn’t look like an outdoor light, it does have a simple design that makes it hard to detect.
When it comes to capturing video, the Arlo is like the Chuck Norris of video capture, it always gets the best shot. In addition, it has mobile apps that are easy to use and feature packed. Often camera apps are like trying to put a puzzle together at night with no lights on, but Arlo is refreshingly easy.
You can also take Arlo indoors, it works well in any environment. But as an outdoor camera it excels, it has eight night-vison infrared lights that can let you see clearly even in the dead of night. The face of the camera also has LED lights that can alert you to an issue with the camera.
Arlo also has a rechargeable battery that can last up to six months. The recharging dock is not connected to the camera, but you can plug it in using the super long 88-inch power cord that comes with the device. With a 130-degree wide-angle glass lens and 183″ megapixel AP CMOS sensor that can capture video at 720p.
The Arlo Pro also has an intelligent motion and sound detection that is event based, so you won’t have the continuous recording that comes with the Arlo Q. But if you have the Q the controls and app are almost the same, so it shouldn’t take you too much time to get used to the Pro.
Our Favorite Indoor DIY Home Security Devices
Abode Home Security Starter Kit
If you are looking for a starter system that is reasonably priced, Abode is the place you should start. It is full DIY, meaning you install it, once you install it you can choose to monitor it yourself, or for $30 a monthly, you can add professional monitoring.
At around $300 you can get a home security system that comes with lots of impressive features. Abode is one of the most feature rich systems you could find. It has a Z-wave and ZigBee hub, two window/door sensors, a security camera and motion detector, a key fob for a remote arm and disarm feature and there are a lot of other things that you can connect to it.
You have to buy some of the add-ons but you can do so ala carte. You can also integrate with Nest, IFTTT and Alexa. Which gives you a wide variety of options and with Alexa you can control Abode using voice commands.
Setting up the starter kit isn’t that difficult. I always like to try and set things up because I am a hot mess when it comes to putting things together. So if I can do it, I am confident you can too. And if you aren’t graceful, one I understand, and two you can hire people who are.
You can connect other devices using the Gateway, which is the Z-wave, ZigBee and WiFi hub. The hub will let you communicate with your sensors using the abodeRF protocol. The protocol encrypts communication between the Gateway and the cloud. The contact sensors can protect doors, windows, cabinets and pretty much anything that opens and closes in your home.
The Gateway can support up to 150 connected devices, and up to six IP streaming cameras. Which over time will allow you to create a robust home security and home automation system. So how is that $300 looking now, pretty good right?
Samsung SmartThings
SmartThings started off okay. It could work with multiple wireless protocols, and you could create If This Then That (IFTTT) recipes (rules you create that controls your devices). But it wasn’t what we expected. We expected more from SmartThings.
It had a lot going for it, but it was lacking some of the things you would expect in a smart home security/automation system. But with the second generation of SmartThings, we are seeing some improvements. Which is great for you.
The first thing you should love about SmartThings is the hub. It’s $99. No, really. One of the awesome things about the second generation hub is the price stayed the same. Even though it can do a lot more now, the price remained at a reasonable $99.
It has a more powerful processor, it supports video cameras and you can control everything with your smartphone, and they didn’t raise the price one penny. Which makes us both surprised and happy.
SmartThings is designed for users who have or want to have a fully connected smart home. With a hub that can manage over 200 devices, you can pretty much connect everything in your house. Well, maybe not that old turntable you can’t seem to let go from your DJing days. But everything else is probably good to go.
You know how you feel when you can’t open a jar, so you start trying to pry it open, and it still won’t budge? Sometimes adding new devices on SmartThings feels like that. If you are adding new devices you will need to bring some patience along with the instructions.
If you want to see things, like your security camera feed, on your TV Samsung can do that. Starting with their 2016 SUHD TVs will come with SmartThings integrations built in. Which means you can manage your devices and see your camera feed on your television.

Scout Alarm Wireless Home Security
If commitments aren’t your thing, Scout is your perfect partner. Scout will never try to tie you into a long-term relationship. And Scout will never try to guilt you into staying with them. That being said, you may find yourself falling for Scout, and that is okay too.
Scout is an attractive home security system, it is sleek and modern. And when it comes to price, it’s very reasonable. After many fruitless searches to find “the one” the founder of Scout felt like all of the existing home security devices were too old looking and dated. So he built his own (now I have the Weird Science song in my head).
He wanted something that wasn’t going to break the bank with expensive demands, so he designed devices that would give you exactly what you need. Scout lets you choose your equipment. It doesn’t make you pick a package, so you can get exactly what you want.
Scout Equipment
Device | Price |
---|---|
Scout Hub | $129 |
Door Panel | $69.00 |
Access Sensor | $29.00 |
Motion Sensor | $49.00 |
Scout also has two monitoring plans you can add. They come with no contracts. So you are free to leave them if things aren’t working out. But we suspect you may keep them around for a while. If you are looking for something long term, you can pay a yearly rate for your monitoring service and save 10%.
You can also customize the rules with Scout. So you can always be the one in charge. While the app has pre-set options Home, Away, Sleep and Vacation, you can add as many additional options as you need. Rules are set in a similar fashion to IFTTT, so if you are familiar with the”If this, then that” formula you should be set. If not we are here to help you.
Scout likes to keep things close to the vest. So they don’t really have that many friends, which is kind of a letdown. If you are into loners and rebels, Scout might be just what you need. But I think Scout would be more appealing if they got out more and made some friends like IFTTT or maybe hang out with SmartThings, they could introduce Scout to hundreds of new friends.

Logi Circle
Why can’t you have the best of both worlds? You deserve it.
The Logi Circle camera is part home security and part video camera. Which means it keeps your home safe while allowing you to record the videos you post on social media.
So you can get more likes while making sure no one steals your stuff, genius right?
Logi Circle was originally built as a nanny cam, but luckily it realized that it was destined for greater things. While the new version can still be a great nanny cam, it is also a formidable home security device. Which makes it a great option for everyone, even if you don’t have a kid or a dog.
Which makes it a great option for everyone, even if you don’t have a kid or a dog.
There was a time when you could tell a webcam from a security camera. But newer security cameras are a blend of both. The Circle is one of the first hybrid cameras, but we are sure they won’t be the last. The Circle has a small base that mounts the camera. The camera itself looks like a baseball with lights, above the lens you have an indicator light that will change colors depending on the status.
The camera itself looks like a baseball with lights, above the lens you have an indicator light that will change colors depending on the status.
While the camera has vertical tilt on the base, you can’t move it left or tight. But if you place it on the magnetic base and charger you will be able to move it both horizontally and vertically. You can even leave it on that base, which makes it easier.
Setting up your Logi Circle is super easy. You just download the Android or iOS apps, turn the Circle on and wait for the light to turn blue and blink. After that, all you have to do is use the app to connect the camera to your WiFi.
If you need to turn the camera off or reset it, you can find both on the Circle. The power button is located under the base and the reset button can be found on the back of the base. These will be the only two external controls. The Circle has no ports or other external connection points.
The app itself is a breeze to use. It has a simple interface and just a few icons. You can see a scrolling wheel that displays your recordings. You can also access the live feed from the main screen. By swiping down you can play existing videos.
They aren’t a lot of options with the Circle. You can swipe left on the app to see the ones that are there. You will find on and off options for the camera, you can flip the video 180 degrees, and toggle the indicator LED, mic, speaker, and automatic night vision. You can also use a power save mode to prolong battery life.
You can also use a power save mode to prolong battery life.
When it comes to indoor home security devices the Logi Circle can give you increased home security and family videos that hopefully won’t embarrass you or your kids. But if they are embarrassing you should put them on YouTube immediately.
If one of your primary wants is a camera with two-way audio Logi Circle has it. But it’s not as good as we would like it to be. There is no volume button, so if you are a soft speaker it is a challenge. You could always yell, but that may not go over well.
SimpliSafe
Why does everyone like SimpliSafe? Largely because they make DIY home security simple.
They also make it easy for you to be a customer. And while they aren’t perfect, they can get the job done. When people (non-handy people like me) see DIY they tend to have two emotions; delight and terror.
I live on the terror side of things. And if you do too, that is okay. But when I tell you that you can install SimpliSafe’s equipment on your own, trust me. I did it myself.
And I once had a concussion from putting together an Ikea shelf. So if clumsy, awkward me can do it, you will be just fine.
Where DIY fails is when people think they know better than the instructions. Instructions exist for a reason. And SimpliSafe makes it super easy. All of the home security devices arrive pre-programmed, they are literally ready to go as soon as you plug them in.
Another reason people like SimpliSafe; no contract. No long document of terms and conditions you never read. I often think I have sold my soul to Apple, but I never read the terms and conditions so I will never know for sure.
But for real, no contract with SimpliSafe. You aren’t happy, just say peace out and leave, there is no cancellation fee. But if you decide to make a short term commitment to SimpliSafe you might start to like them. And who knows where it can go from there.
You will have to purchase the equipment up front. But once you do so it is yours. There are five different packages that you can choose from. If you need to start small, you can. But if you want to go big and buy it all, you can do that too.
These are the current packages that you can choose from.

SimpliSafe recently added a home security camera, which was something we had long felt they were lacking. While it is not currently integrated into their equipment packages you can buy it $99. Which isn’t all that bad in terms of price.
You aren’t just limited to the packages, you can buy additional devices. Often you may have more doors and windows than you do sensors, so you can purchase what you need to make sure every access point to your home is covered.
If you aren’t interested in monitoring your own home security system you can purchase a monthly service from SimpliSafe.
They have two packages that you can choose from. You can get a Standard plan that covers your home 24/7 or for $24.99 you can add an interactive plan that will send you email and SMS alerts in addition to the 24/7 coverage.
If you choose the Interactive plan you will get some additional features. You can set up sensors that are in Alert Mode, which means that if the sensor is tripped it won’t contact the monitoring center, it will just send you an alert. These sensors work best on cabinets, they work great to keep your kids out of things they shouldn’t be into.
If you want to self-monitor you can do that. You will just need to have your smartphone available anytime you are away. You will get an alert when a sensor is triggered, and at that point, you will be the one that has to call law enforcement.
This is why we recommend the monitoring service. But we also respect your choices.

Frontpoint
First, you should know, we kind of love Frontpoint. And we aren’t ashamed to say it.
So why do we love them so much? Because they love their customers. And to us, that is a really big deal. Does this mean you have to love them? No. But we think you will.
With 96% of their customers willing to recommend Frontpoint (we are part of the 96%), it’s kind of hard to ignore the word of the people. There are other things that make Frontpoint our preferred home security provider.
All of their equipment comes with a three-year warranty which means you don’t have to worry if a device stops working. You can also choose a contract term that works for you. The 3-year contract gives you the biggest discount, but if you aren’t ready for that you can choose a one or two-year option.

iSmartAlarm
Not all home security is made the same. If you have a larger than average home you can often find packages that don’t give you want you need.
That is why we like iSmartAlarm. They make it easy to protect every door and window in your home. Even if you have a lot of them.
iSmartAlarm uses a modular approach to home security. You can connect a variety of switches, sensors, cameras and other devices to build your own security system. So you can buy what you need in the amount you need.
Everything with iSmartAlarm is controlled using the CubeOne hub. The hub acts as the activities coordinator and manages all of the sensors and switches. While this may sound complicated, it is easier than you may think.
iSmartAlarm puts you in charge of your home security. You can choose where you place sensors and other devices. DIY is a great option if you want a highly customized home security system.
But before you place your order you need to know that this system is SELF-MONITORED. This means that everything runs through you. You will be notified by a push notification when a sensor is triggered. Once that happens you have to call the authorities.
If you are cool with that iSmartAlarm may be the perfect system for you. There are no monthly fees and no contracts.
You can also add as many sensors as you need. So if you have a lot of square footage you can make sure that your entire home is protected.
There are a few things that kind of bother us. First is the lack of a home monitoring option. It can be challenging to self-manage your home security, especially when you are away from home. While you will get notifications through the app, you will have to have your phone with you 24/7.
Another issue we have had is with the iCamera. While everything else is easy to set up, this camera is not. There are are some issues when you are connecting it to the CubeOne hub.
Why we still like them is the way they let you customize your home security. They make it easy to add home security devices. Size doesn’t matter to iSmartAlarm and we like them for that.

Smart Remote Outlets
You may be thinking, what do smart remote outlets have to do with home security?
Adding smart remote outlets allows you to turn things on and off when you aren’t at home. So if someone sees your lights come on in the evenings they will assume that someone is home. Which decreases the likelihood of someone breaking into you home.
They are an inexpensive way to keep your home protected when you aren’t home. They aren’t meant to substitute home security devices, they are just another tool to keep your home secure.
When it comes to smart remote outlets, we recommend the iHome ISP5 Smartplug. It doesn’t cost much, but it lets you manage the plug from your smartphone. Using the app you can create a schedule to turn the plug on and off.
You can also connect the Smart plug to other devices in your home including the Wink hub, the Nest Learning Thermostat, and Alexa. So for a small investment, you can get some pretty big returns.

Smart Home Locks
Most break-ins occur at your front door. So making it harder for someone to get it is a great idea. The Kwikset SmartCode lock makes it tough for someone to compromise your lock. While you can still use your key, the SmartCode feature makes you enter two random numbers before you can unlock the door with your code.
While you can still use your key, the SmartCode feature makes you enter two random numbers before you can unlock the door with your code.
The two random numbers will keep someone from using finger smudges to figure out your passcode. And should someone try to break in the SmartCode also has an alarm. You can also connect your lock to several smart home hubs that use ZigBee or Z-Wave.
If you are new to Smart locks this one is a great way to ease into something new.

Voice Control Smart Hubs
If you want to build a formidable home security system you will need a way to manage it. And what better way than by asking your hub?
Both Google Home and Alexa have some real street cred when it comes to helping you manage your home security devices. Now, some devices don’t play well with them, but the ones that do can be managed just by asking.
I am biased here. It happens to all of us at some point, we find something we love and we want to tell the world. So I love Google Home. It is a deep and abiding love. And having had it for a few months, I can’t live without it.
It makes me coffee in the morning and turns my lights off at night. I mean what is better than that.
Google is also better looking…
So when it comes to how you manage your home security devices using Google Home or Alexa, we will talk about both, it comes down to what they connect to. First, let’s look at what security devices play nice with Google:
- Belkin WeMo: this allows you to turn your lights or appliance off with a voice command
- IFTTT: this allows you to create recipes that can control your devices
- Samsung SmartThings: you can connect home security devices via the hub and control them using Google Home.
When it comes to Alexa, these are the home security devices that you can control:
- August Smart Lock: you can control the lock using voice commands
- Scout Alarm: this is a big one, it allows you to control your security system
- Netgear Arlo: you can use Alexa to manage your security camera
- Ring Doorbell and Security Camera: same as the August lock
So while Alexa has a small advantage on home security devices, you can expect Google Home to continue to add new devices as well. But the Scout/Alexa connection is pretty cool.
Smart Thermostats & Detection Devices
I see the puzzled look in your eyes. Why are thermostats part of a home security device post? Because they belong here, and when you are done reading this, I think you will agree.
Home security isn’t always about some masked intruder breaking into your home and stealing your valuables.
Security means being free from danger or threat. But not all threats are obvious. So we want to help you to get some nonobvious devices that will keep you safe.
Nest Learning Thermostat
If you aren’t familiar with Nest, first you should know their thermostat has a lot to offer. This now brings us to the “this has something to do with home security because?” part of the review.
Ok, so let’s say you are away from home and your pipes burst. That would suck big time, especially if you were gone for a week.
Your floors would be damaged, your carpet destroyed. But with the Nest Thermostat, you would get an alert to let you know that the temperature in your house may cause your pipes to burst.
So you would know what to do BEFORE the pipes burst. Which is keeping your house safe. But that is not all Nest can do. They can work with your lights and locks as well. All Nest products are designed to work together, so they can help keep your home safe from internal threats.

Nest Protect
In case you need more evidence that nest can keep your home safe, we bring you the Nest Protect. This nifty smoke/carbon monoxide detector can tell the difference between burned cookies and a fire. It comes packed with an industrial level smoke sensor, which can test itself.
You can also get alerts on your smartphone should the Nest Protect detect smoke. So you can know what is taking place and take action.
The average fire takes only 5 minutes to take over a room.
With the Nest Protect alerts, you have better odds of containing a fire before it gets out of control. You also get a CO detector. Carbon Monoxide cannot be seen, smelled or tasted, which means in the event of a leak you will never know its happening unless you have a CO detector.
Nest Protect does double duty to keep your home and family protected. So if you weren’t sure about how some unobvious devices could keep your home safe, now you can add more devices to your list.

What You Need to Get to Keep Your DIY from Becoming DOA
If you are going pure DIY that means that you will need to purchase sensors and detection devices. Sensors are what make your home security system work effectively. Sure cameras can record an intruder, but sensors sound the alarm and send alerts.
As sensors become smarter, they make the DIY home security system less reliant on external solutions, like professional monitoring services. Now, around these parts, we do love us some professional monitoring, but if you don’t we are cool with that.
If you are going to build your own home security system from the ground up, there are some devices that are a must have.
- Motion sensors: you should attach motion sensors to your doors and windows. If someone tries to open a window, the sensor will sound an alarm. But if you aren’t home you won’t hear it. We recommend you invest in smarter sensors. Sensors shouldn’t be standalone, they should connect with a hub that will send you a text or email when a sensor sounds an alarm.
- Motion detectors: these are different from motion sensors. They can sense when a person or your dog is moving. Sensors just let you know when someone opens something. Motion detectors can let you know when something is moving in the area the detector is placed.
- Smart motion sensors and detectors: while basic sensors and motion detectors can do basic things, making them smarter will make your life easier. You won’t have to wonder what is happening at your home when you have smarter devices.
- Smart sensors & detectors: the biggest thing that smart sensors and detectors can do is communicate. They can communicate with a hub, or even with one another. They can also communicate with you via a smartphone app. So should something set off an alarm, you will know and be able to take the appropriate course of action.
Why You Should Invest in Home Security Devices
Whether you choose to add a service from a provider or you want to forge your own way and build your home security your way. The most important thing is that you are keeping your home and your family safe.
Everyone should have some sort of home security system.
There are a lot of reasons we don’t do things. From financial reasons to the fear of looking stupid in the home security section of the Home Depot (this is why I order stuff online). Regardless of the reason, you should always keep your home secure.
If you are a DIY kind of person, there are a lot of cool options out there for you. Or if you aren’t (one I feel you) and two you can get your friends or a paid professional, don’t worry we can keep a secret. If you are new to DIY these are some tips to help you get started.
Get a New Front Door
Okay, so maybe this isn’t technically a “device” but it is important. Most homes don’t have a door that is adequate enough to stop someone from kicking the door in. If you don’t have a solid door, you should consider adding one. The front door is where most break-ins take place, so adding a solid door can help keep your home secure.
You don’t want to buy an expensive lock if someone can just kick your door in.
Add Some Outdoor Lighting
If you don’t want to add a device like the Kuna or Netgear Arlo, you should at least considered adding some muscle to the outside of the house. Adding lights with motion sensors can be a great way to scare off someone trying to get in.
Pay a Professional Installer
You know what sucks? You spend your day on a ladder putting in a security camera that comes crashing down twenty minutes later. Don’t let your ego destroy your smart home security devices.
Look, there is no shame in not being handy. You are awesome in other ways. You don’t have anything to prove. We like you just the way you are. So hire someone who knows how to install your stuff. It will help you sleep at night.
Smart Home Security devices that can keep things safe when you are on vacation.
We all love vacation. We plan for it, wait for it and cannot wait to run out of the house and get on our way. Which means we forget things. Before you go on vacation, you need to make sure that you will have a plan that will keep your home safe.
If you have someone you trust that can keep an eye on things, that is awesome. If you don’t, or you don’t trust anyone, here are a few things you can add, and do to keep your home from being broken into.
Things You Should Do
If you love checklists like I love checklists, here is a good one for you to follow:
- Stop your mail: if you are going to be gone for more than two days you should stop delivery. Nothing says nobody is home like a stuffed mailbox. This also covers any newspaper deliveries.
- Have someone check on things: if you have a neighbor you like and trust ask them to check for any fliers on your door and remove them. If you don’t have any neighbors you like you may want to make a friend before you leave. It’s cheaper than paying someone to do it.
- Look like you are home: you can purchase inexpensive remote outlets and timers that can turn your light and television on and off. This will make it look like you are home.
- Hire someone to mow the lawn: If you are going to be gone for more than a few days it worth it to make sure you look like you are home.
- Don’t advertise that you are away: Tweeting or posting on FB can wait until you are home. If you have lots of followers you are literally telling them you aren’t home so come rob me. There will be plenty of time to make them jealous when you get home.
Things You Should Buy
I know, you are going on vacation and you don’t want to spend money. But if you buy just a few devices that can let you turn your lights and television on from your smartphone, trust me it will be more than worth it.
For around 35 bucks you can get the WeMo Mini Smart Plug, it’s Wi-Fi enables and works with both Alexa and Google home. And true to its name it’s pretty darn smart. You can control it from your smartphone, you just need to leave the Wi-Fi on.
You can set schedules that can turn different lights and devices at set times. It can even work with your Nest Thermostat. So if you don’t have your lights and appliances automated yet, this is an inexpensive way to manage your home while you are away.
In Conclusion
You need home security. And if you have a few devices, you most likely don’t have everything you need. There is a lot of stuff in your house that you really like. So protecting your home, family, and stuff is a good idea and a sound investment.
You can start small and add new devices when you can. But you need to start. Even if you replace the lock or a door, you will be on your way to making sure everything you love is safe. Everyone has at least one thing they would hate to lose, so make sure you have what you need to keep the things you cherish most safe and sound.
